Book News: Lauren Conrad's Got a Dark Side?!

Lauren Conrad says she's planning on penning a spinoff of her L.A. Candy novels.

"I'm going to take Madison from the book and do a darker series," she told me the other night the Hills finale party. "I already wrote a little bit and it was really fun."

L.A. Candy focuses on Jane Roberts, a young woman who moves to Hollywood, gets a job with an events planner and eventually lands her own reality show. Like Conrad, Jane isn't always happy with her fame and the attention it brings. (FYI: She just completed writing third installment of the Candy trilogy).

"I think it would be really fun to do it the other way, with someone who loves it," Conrad explained. "Someone who loves the fame and plays that game well."

As for those plans to turn L.A. Candy into a movie, Conrad sighed, "It's a very slow process."

Lauren Conrad: 'The Hills' To Hollywood Mogul

What began as a reality television gig on “Laguna Beach” has turned into a full-fledged multifaceted career, and Lauren Conrad is counting her lucky stars.

The “Hills” babe left her MTV roots to pursue writing bestselling books and designing clothes and it has definitely panned out for her.

Of her first novel “LA Candy,” Conrad explained, "I didn't take anything specifically that happened to me. The only thing that I did was ... it was a way to show not necessarily me, but just the other side of being on a show like ours. For everyone that's done it, I think you see one side and you don't see the other. It's kind of an interesting story to tell."

As for her LC Lauren Conrad clothing brand with Kohl’s, "It's very much a California brand. It's all about incorporating new trends and putting our own twist on it — relaxed cool without trying too hard.”

L.A. Candy Is 'Three Books, One Movie'

Lauren Conrad and her team — including the same producers behind the blockbuster "Twilight" franchise — are hard at work trying to make sure they get the film adaptation of her "L.A. Candy" book trilogy just right. However, Conrad said that each book will not get its own accompanying film.

"Actually, the movie is meant to be based on the story that's told over the three books that I'm writing — three books, one movie," she told MTV News while promoting her latest tome, "Sweet Little Lies." "It's a trilogy. It's one story being told over the three, so I think it's one overall story."

Conrad is still focused on the big-screen story line of fictional reality star Jane Roberts and admits that she has yet to attach any A-list actors to the role. "No, we're still working with writers," she said about casting decisions. "And in the early stages."

Late last year, Conrad joked to MTV News that she'd like to see her former "Hills" castmember Lo Bosworth tackle the role of Jane, based on some of Conrad's own real-life experiences as a reality-TV star. "I have to do research. We'll see," she said. "I would like Lo Bosworth. Lo has taken a couple of acting classes in her life.

"No [I don't know who should be in it]," Conrad added. "[That's] the question I do not have an answer for. I have no idea! I feel like I'm going to shoot for someone crazy amazing and then they're going to be like, 'Ugh, yeah, I'll do your movie.' "

Lauren Conrad: Another Bestseller

She struck gold with her debut novel “LA Candy,” and now Lauren Conrad has done it again with her new release “Sweet Little Lies.”

The “Hills” hottie’s second book has topped the New York Times bestseller list, and she couldn’t be happier about it.

Lauren explained, “It’s so gratifying for my second book to be so successful and it was so fun to write! The characters were already developed so I really enjoyed the process so much more this time around. All the characters have become like my friends now.”

And as it turns out, being an author is much more laid back than her Reality TV gig. “I just sat in bed writing and it was the best process. Who gets to work from home in their PJ’s?”

Is Sweet Little Lies All About Lauren's Sarcasm?

Lauren Conrad knows a thing or two about selling books. Her first novel, L.A. Candy, became an international bestseller, and now she's hoping for a repeat with her follow-up, Sweet Little Lies. So what's her secret to success? Great marketing and, of course, the decision to write about what she knows.

"I got to have fun with it," Lauren revealed yesterday at a book signing in Miami (CLICK HERE FOR PICTURES). "[A]nd, in a way, tell a similar story as far as things you go through ... without spilling [all my] secrets." But that doesn't mean she's keeping Candy fans completely in the dark.

"Jane is the main character and most like me," Lauren admitted. "But also when I was more sarcastic and against the The Hills, I was able to illustrate that through Scarlett, her best friend."

Lauren: Life After Reality TV "Less Stressful"

Former reality TV starlet Lauren Conrad said last night that life after the "Hills" has been much more care-free than her days in the searing spotlight.

"It is a lot less stressful," she said during a Miami book signing Wednesday night. "You don't have to worry so much about the way you look or what you're wearing or what you're saying. You can breathe. ... I have time to do a lot of stuff that I couldn't do before."

Conrad offered a glimpse into her life off the small screen during a tween-packed signing at Books & Books last night for her new tome "Sweet Little Lies," a follow-up to New York Times-bestseller "LA Candy," which is loosely based on her life.

But don't expect Conrad to use her books as a way to dish on all the juicy details that went on behind the scenes.

"I think the main difference between my life and the books I write are that I made up people and I made up situations," she said

"I got to have fun with it, and, in a way, tell a similar story as far as things you go through and things you experience and what's it's like -- without spilling other secrets."

Even as other MTV reality shows such as "Jersey Shore" enjoy success, Lauren appears to be enjoying a somewhat low-key life in which she now has time to work on creating a clothing line and spend vacation time with her boyfriend, "My Boys" star Kyle Howard.

But what if MTV conjured up a "Hills" meets "Shore" spin-off?

"No, but I would watch it," she said.

Lauren Conrad: Book Signing Sweetheart

Continuing her successful career as an author, Lauren Conrad was spotted promoting her new book “Sweet Little Lies” in Miami, Florida yesterday (February 10).

The “Hills” hottie looked a bit tuckered out as she signed copies of her latest work at Books & Books in Coral Gables, sporting a pretty patterned dress with a black headband.

Miss Conrad has been going nonstop for quite some time, and relied on several cans of Red Bull to keep peppy for her fans.

“Sweet Little Lies” is the follow-up to Lauren’s best-selling debut book “LA Candy,” as she makes her transition from Reality TV starlet to uber-popular wordsmith.

Lauren Conrad: Orlando Book Signing

Lauren Conrad does not disappoint her Central Florida fans. The star of MTV’s reality shows Laguna Beach and The Hills is at Borders Books in Winter Park this evening, signing copies of her novel Sweet Little Lies, the second in her L.A. Sweet series.

Dressed in a chic charcoal-gray jacket, tailored short-shorts and black pumps with towering heels, her short nails painted wine-red, the diminutive star enters with little fanfare, takes a seat at a small table on a raised platform, and reaches for a pen.

I expect the 450-or-so fans to errupt in applause, cheers and whistles. Instead, they greet Conrad’s arrival with a kind of awed silence. Then a murmur of excitement ripples down the long, long line snaking among the bookshelves.

“It’s really her,” breathes a young woman in skinny jeans and boyfriend sweater standing behind me, her cell-phone camera trained on Conrad.

And so the signing begins. With a smile, a comment and a quiet, “Thank you,” the 24-year-old author signs books for the fans, mostly young women in their early 20s, who line up for more than two hours for about 30 seconds of the actor/writer/designer’s time.

“I love your show, Lauren.” “I’ve watched every show, Lauren.” “I’m wearing your sweater, Lauren.” (Conrad designs the popular LC Lauren Conrad junior clothing line sold exclusively at Kohl’s.”

Buy It: Lauren's Nanette Lepore Dress

Look just like Lauren Conrad in this Nanette Lepore Exotic Plume Dress ($298) which she recently wore to a book signing promoting her new book for the L.A. Candy series, Sweet Little Lies.

Audrina Patridge: Ask Men Interview

AskMen.com : You were No. 35 on our AskMen.com list of the Top 99 Most Desirable Women of 2010. I know you already gave us a quote about what being on the list means to you, but I wondered if there was anything else you’d like to say to the readers? Audrina Patridge : I can’t believe I’m No. 35 out of 99. That’s insane! I’m so excited and I’m glad that everybody voted. I’m so flattered and so grateful. It’s awesome.

AM : For people who don’t know, how did you originally get involved in The Hills, which came out of Laguna Beach? AP : I was already living in L.A. and established. I had a full-time job at Quixote Studios. The place where I was living at the time – I was laying out on the sundeck of the pool. The executive producer Adam Divello was out there scouting the place for Lauren and Heidi because they were moving to L.A. He came up to me and talked to me, and I told what I was doing and why I was in L.A. and I wanted to do acting. I went in and met with the other people. I met Heidi and we became friends instantly. Lauren and I didn’t become friends instantly, but Heidi and I did. I started filming three weeks later.
AM : Did you worry that going into reality TV might hinder your dreams of being an actor? AP : Yes. I really did. I contemplated for days. I was so unsure. Then I thought, “What have I got to lose? I’ll just do this for the last part of the month and it will be a good experience in front of the camera.” Then five years later, I am still in it.
AM : I had read that you originally planned on leaving the show after the fifth season but you’ve signed on for season six. What was it that made you stay? AP : I was going to sign off for good, and then I talked to the producers and I’m still doing my show. I’m not going to do the full season six. I’m doing it because it’s a good paycheck and it’s easy.
AM : When you do your spin off – called The Audrina Show, tentatively – what will the focus of that be? AP : Everything from photo shoots to red carpet events to going to auditions -- my publicist and my team. The tone of it is very raw and very different from The Hills.
AM : Did you ever feel that you were misrepresented on The Hills? AP : Yeah, totally. It’s so frustrating, and I get so angry because my fans really believe that sometimes. It’s really frustrating sometimes because I am playing myself, so sometimes in different situations it’s been edited or cut differently. I figure, with my show, it will be more raw and real. All the e-mails I get from my fans, they basically want to know more, like Why don’t they show the paparazzi? Why were you seen here with this person but it’s not on The Hills? Why aren’t you ever seen with The Hills people hanging out? So this is really me opening up my real private door and letting my friends come with me on my real… my journey.
AM : Cool. I know that Kristin Cavallari has said that she came back to The Hills because she’s known for drama and she knows how to create it. Is that something you agree with [on The Hills] – that a lot of it is created for the sake of drama? AP : The cameras are there, and you’re obviously going to hype things up a little bit, especially when there’s alcohol involved and going to clubs [laughs]. Definitely, it’s easy to create drama and make things more interesting.
AM : I know that you have spoken about Heidi's plastic surgery, which is obviously in the tabloids right now. Do you think that’s something she did as a publicity stunt or is it a self-image thing? AP : That’s something you’d really have to ask her. I haven’t seen her or talked to her in person since she got it. We’ll text back and forth now and then, but that’s about it. I really don’t know. I haven’t even seen the inside of the [Us Weekly] magazine yet [that feautres a cover story on Heidi's surgery]; I’ve only seen the cover. That’s it.

AM : Did you have a reaction to her album not doing so well? There were only a thousand albums sold in the first week. AP : I haven’t even heard her album yet. I know that she worked on it for three years. I don’t know. When I first met Heidi, she never wanted to be a singer. I think it’s just something she did to have fun with.
AM : Do you watch Jersey Shore? Because it's pretty much the exact opposite of you guys on The Hills. AP : I know! I have watched it. It’s completely opposite!
AM : What do you think is the draw to that show and why it ended up working? AP : I watched it, and I watched about four episodes in a row. I was like, “Oh my God! What’s going to happen with Sammi and that guy?” I don’t know. You just want to see what else they’re going to do because they’re just so out there and random. There are always fights, and what they say! It’s so funny.
AM : Do you think though that they’ll be able to do a second season because they’ll be a lot more aware – like you already are – of the editing and the drama? AP : I think they don’t care because they actually have cameras in the house. It reminds me of The Real World. I think we’re more aware -- or I know I am -- and I won’t do crazy things just to get a reaction and be crazy because I have a future and I want to go further in my future with acting. It depends if they have goals other than being drunk on a reality TV show.

I also read, in terms of acting, that it’s possible that you will be starring in a film version of L.A. Candy [a novel based on The Hills by Lauren Conrad]. Do you know anything about that? I haven’t even read the book. I am not going to star in it, and I’m not even going to be in it. I haven’t read the book at all. I have heard that Lauren based it off of us girls from the previous season. I heard how she portrayed my character, and it isn’t like me at all. She kind of made me sound really ditsy and stupid. So yeah, I don’t think so. I’ll pass on that.

Have you experienced in your own life -- I’m thinking back to Jessica Simpson and Nick Lachey -- is it possible to have a real love life when you are a star of a reality show or does it become a problem or an issue? It does become a problem because there is always drama and there are always people in your ear. You start questioning each other and whether things are true or if they’re false. If you’re not together all the time then you really don’t know. It’s really hard to have a relationship and be on a reality show, but I feel if you both start off where you’re very open about things and honest with each other then it could work.

Do you find that you learn more about what’s happening in your life from the tabloids than you do from the actual people involved? Yes. I find out in the tabloids that I’m dating someone before I actually am dating someone. Most of it is not true, and I try to clear up as much as I can on my Twitter or on my website, but a lot of time I just laugh at it. People are going to believe what they want.

Can you really ignore the cameras [on the show] when they’re there and you’re filming a really emotional moment? Yeah. I think from filming so long that you learn how to block them out. Now, when we film, I don’t even feel that the cameras are there. I’m aware of them, but I don’t let that stop me from acting or still being emotional or saying what I’m going to say.

What’s your filming schedule actually like? Is it a Monday-to-Friday type thing? It really depends. This week we’re on hold Wednesday to Saturday, and the next week we are on hold Wednesday to Monday. It changes every week depending what’s going on and everybody’s schedule.

Q21: Do you think you will be friends with some of your cast members when you're done with The Hills? Yeah, I think I will stay in touch with everybody. I run into them. It’s obviously going to happen in L.A. It’s a big city, but it’s not so big because everybody goes to the same places. I’ll still stay in touch, and I’ll still see everybody now and then.
Q22:Is it going to be weird when you’re older and your kids are going to be able to watch it? Is that something that is exciting to you? Yes, it is, but I don’t want my kids watching it until they’re teenagers! [laughs] It will be exciting. You don’t watch it for years but when you do, all those memories come back and the feelings that you went through.

Do you think reality shows are here to stay, or do you think it is a phenomenon that might fade out over the next five years or so? I really feel like people are still interested in real people, and there are so many different kinds of reality TV right now. I think people think they can relate to the people on reality shows more than actors. But then again, who knows? This industry changes so quickly. You never know.

Lauren Conrad: Boston Book Signing

Continuing to tour the east coast, Lauren Conrad greeted fans at Barnes & Noble at the Prudential Center in Boston on Friday (February 5).

Fresh off of a two-day press stretch in New York, the former “Hills” hottie looked darling as she signed copies of her book new “Sweet Little Lies”.

Talking about her latest work, Lauren recently told MTV News, “I think that if fans take anything away from the book, [they should realize] there’s a back side to every story.”

Miss Conrad continues, “And when you’re reading tabloids and seeing these people’s lives exposed, it does affect them and it is hard to go through as a young girl.”

Lauren Says L.A. Candy Follow-Up Get's 'Deeper'

With "L.A. Candy" becoming a bestseller last year, it's time for Lauren Conrad to prove that she has what it takes to move more books with the second novel in her trilogy, "Sweet Little Lies." While the story of reality-TV star Jane Roberts is a work of fiction, Conrad said the lessons she learns are very, very real.

"I think that if fans take anything away from the book, [they should realize] there's a back side to every story," she told MTV News while on her book tour. "And when you're reading tabloids and seeing these people's lives exposed, it does affect them and it is hard to go through as a young girl."

Conrad, who left "The Hills" last year, revealed that when it comes to dealing with the pressures of fame she and Jane both realize "you live and learn," adding, "I think we deal with it the same."

So what has Jane learned in the new book? Well, that it's probably best not to take nude photos, and also to be a lot less naïve about the pitfalls of fame or the motives of the people around her. "The second book basically picks up where the first book left off so it kind of just continues to tell the story. It gets a little bit deeper into Hollywood and the behind-the-scenes look of a reality show," she explained. "There's a new guy ... I think that in the first book she was a little bit naïve — the second book is where she gets burned and after that is where she is gonna grow."

However, Conrad admits that when she got on her start on "The Hills," she understood the dark side of Hollywood a lot better than Jane does. "I made a Jane a little more naïve than I was — other than that she was pretty similar. It was easier to tell the story in my own voice — when you're writing it comes very naturally," she said. "The emotional moments where she's going through things and being frustrated and kind of overwhelmed — those are me."

Lauren Conrad: Barnes & Noble Babe

Stepping out for a promotional appearance, Lauren Conrad was spotted hamming it up at the Barnes & Noble bookstore in Tribeca, Manhattan yesterday (February 3).

The former “Hills” hottie was in the house to scare up some sales for her new novel “Sweet Little Lies,” the follow-up to the uber-successful “LA Candy.”

In related news, Lauren recently weighed in on her former costar Heidi Montag’s plethora of plastic surgery procedures.

She explained, “Everybody’s different. Everybody needs to do what’s good for them.” When asked if she’d considered plastic surgery for herself, Conrad replied, “Not so far, no.”

Lauren Conrad Exclusive: Sweet Little Lies

Lauren Conrad gives you an exclusive excerpt from her new book, Sweet Little Lies!

Just before 9 a.m. on Monday morning, Jane pulled into her usual parking spot behind Fiona Chen's building. She turned off the engine and carefully searched the entire lot through the window. Good - no photographers. She'd had to fend off two of them outside the apartment earlier. They were so obnoxious, shouting out questions at her about Braden and Jesse - "Jane, why did Braden move to New York?" "Jane, what do you think of Jesse's new girlfriend?" - and snapping picture after picture of her while she gritted her teeth and tried to ignore them. She hadn't heard anything about Braden going to New York or Jesse having a girlfriend. But she knew better than to talk to paparazzi.

Still . . . the thought of Braden and Jesse moving on without her, and so quickly, made her heart feel heavy. Neither had tried to contact her since the Gossip story broke. Obviously she hadn't tried to contact them, either. She knew she had to at some point. She owed Braden an apology—for hooking up with him when she was so mixed-up about everything, and for inadvertently getting him involved in this whole mess. And she owed Jesse an even bigger apology. She had no idea how she could possibly make things right after cheating on him, and in front of the whole world, too.

There was one guy she didn't owe anything—and he seemed to have no problem getting in touch with her: Caleb had texted her yesterday, from Vail—something about the awesome powder, and did she remember when they went to Tahoe during her senior year, and she wiped out on her new snowboard, like, twenty times? A few minutes later, he had texted her a photo of her lying in a pile of snow and laughing hysterically. Jane had no idea why he was sending her this stuff. It was nice that he was thinking about her. But confusing. And she didn't need "confusing" right now, on top of everything else.

Riding up to her office in the crowded elevator, Jane felt butterflies in her stomach. And not the good kind. She hadn't been to work in over a week, and she was really nervous about facing Fiona. She had sent her boss a quick email yesterday, saying that she would be back in the office on Monday. Fiona had responded right away, writing simply: SEE YOU TOMORROW AT 9 SHARP.

So what was in store for Jane at 9 sharp? A furious Fiona waiting with a long lecture? A pink slip, telling her that she had two weeks to find new employment? Maybe one followed by the other. Can't wait. To make things worse, the L.A. Candy cameras were up there already, prepared to shoot Jane's return to work. When Trevor had called Jane yesterday, Jane had felt compelled to pick up after ignoring him for so long. He asked her if it would be okay for them to shoot her at work the following day. After going MIA on him, what could she say but yes?

Much to her surprise, Trevor had been really sweet on the phone and didn't sound angry at all about the Gossip thing or her disappearing to Cabo. Which was weird, since he'd sounded so stressed in his messages. He told her that he was happy she was back, and that everything was going to be fine. He said that he'd been thinking about how to present "recent events" on the show, and thought her story line should be that she had cheated on Jesse (without naming Braden, of course), and that she wasn’t sure who had spilled the news to Jesse. Maybe she could confess to someone, like her coworker and friend Hannah Stratton, that she felt really bad about the whole thing. It would be Jane's opportunity to tell her side of the story. He promised her that after people saw her side, everything would be better. And that was that. Trevor added that he would talk to each of the girls—Madison, Gaby, Scarlett, and Hannah—to clue them in on his ideas...
